Spring

Thank you, Pixel, because I felt like I should post something but feel mentally lethargic. It’s time to think about planting things, and I like planting things. I’m more of a perennial kind of girl–I like the magic of things reappearing each year on their own–although I will always have a soft spot for pansies and snapdragons, because those are the first flowers I ever planted in my first flower bed. (Although I noticed out west that pansies CAN be perennials, given the right climate.) My garden favorites are as follows: lilies of the valley, bleeding hearts, tulips, irises, tiger lilies, crocuses, lilacs, old fashioned roses. Nothing fancy, just things that pop up and are a treat to discover. I also love hens and chicks, because I think they are ugly and hilarious, and they just keep coming. I like geraniums in pots, fuchsias in hanging baskets, and I love forsythias, dogwoods, magnolia trees, apple blossoms, honeysuckles. I like wildflowers, because they are even more mysterious than perennials.

Here is what is already growing here: one small rose bush (which I was excited to see was not dead), three green and golds (plagued with scale, but still growing), some bushy bland evergreen shrubs, and a few hostas that are poking through the ground awkwardly. The tulips and daylilies that I planted last fall are coming up surprisingly well.

Last night I bought another hosta and another pitiful looking rose bush (it was on clearance) so the existing plants would have some company. This summer I want to focus on getting some flowering shrubs established, especially in front of the house and by our little patio/deck. Jut and I are planning on checking out shrubs and small trees this weekend.

My first nephew, the son of my twin brother, was born last night after hours and hours of labor. He weighed in at 8.1 pounds and is 19″ long. Late last night when my mom called to tell me, she told me he hadn’t been breathing when he was born and the doctors are concerned about a wheezing noise in his lungs. Poor (huge) little guy; let’s all send happy warm thoughts/vibes/prayers/whatever it is you prefer.

EDIT: The nephew is fine.  It sounds as though he has a nice loud healthy voice and a nice big healthy appetite, so he obviously belongs in our family.

Love,
